Little Rock City Leaders Working to Improve Affordable Housing Shortage

Little Rock's Sixth Ward is getting a much-needed boost in affordable housing with the addition of 16 houses for low to moderate income families. The Department of Housing and Neighborhood Programs is offering up to $20,000 in subsidies to make this dream a reality.

• Set the cornerstone: This is the first step in fulfilling the city's goal of 100 new housing units.

• Breaking ground: Construction on the new homes is expected to be finished in the next year and a half, granting the wish of hundreds of families on the waiting list.

Walker Foundation Pledges $1 Million to UAMS' Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute Radiation Oncology Center

UAMS Cancer Institute received a generous donation from the Willard and Pat Walker Charitable Foundation of $1 million to help support the new Radiation Oncology Center, which opened in July.

• Cancer-fighting philanthropy: The funds provided by the Walker Foundation will go towards providing world-class, specialty care to Arkansans with the most cutting-edge cancer treatments available.

• Ethos Adaptive Therapy: The Center is the only one in Arkansas to offer this innovative form of X-ray radiation that adjusts to changing circumstances during treatment.

Coalition Pushes for Buffalo River National Park Preserve to Protect Hunting and Fishing and Bring Economic Benefits

The Coalition for Buffalo River National Park is proposing to convert the Buffalo National River area into a National Park and Preserve.

• National Preserve: This would protect hunting, fishing, trapping, and oil and gas extraction, while still restricting activities like mining and consumptive-use.

• Economic Impact: The proposal includes increased infrastructure and funding for roads, bathrooms, and parking lots. No private land would be taken, so no eminent domain.
