Fifty Million Dollars of Arkansas's Opioid Settlement to Fund Research Facility at Children's Hospital

Fifty million dollars of Arkansas’s opioid crisis settlement money will fund a new research facility at Arkansas Children’s Hospital dedicated to exploring connections between pediatrics and the opioid epidemic. 

  • Big investment: The 45,000-square-foot National Center for Opioid Research & Clinical Effectiveness (NCOR) is the largest investment from the state's $250 million settlement money against 65 opioid manufacturers and distributors. 

  • Groundbreaking: Construction on the $70 million facility is expected to begin in late 2024. In the meantime, recruitment for a center director will begin immediately.

Dillard's Balancing Sales and Profitability in Q3

Dillard's Inc. unveiled their Q3 fiscal 2023 results, presenting a blend of challenges and triumphs.

  • Sales Slide, Earnings Shine: Despite a 6% dip in both total and comparable store sales, kicked off by a September slump, Dillard’s still managed a strong quarter. Their earnings per share soared to $9.49, surpassing estimates by 38.81%, with a net income standing tall at $155.3 million​​​​​​.

  • Strategic Moves: In the face of declining sales, Dillard's played a strategic game. They achieved a 45.3% retail gross margin while slimming down inventory by 1%. However, operating expenses climbed to $421.8 million, primarily due to increased payroll expenses. Adding to their strategic endeavors, Dillard’s repurchased $48 million in stock​​​​.
